Competition Judge

Nick is a retired corporate communications and marketing manager having worked in senior positions in the telecommunications and energy industries. He lives in Norfolk.

He has been making pictures for 50 years having started out with a Kodak Instamatic when he was 12 years old. Although having successfully moved from darkroom to the digital environment, he does still use a film camera from time to time. He has been involved in and competed at local camera clubs since the 1970s and is a member of Wayland Photographic Club in Norfolk and a camera club judge on the East Anglian Federation of Photographical Societies circuit.

Although experimenting with many genres of photography his first love is monochromatic images that capture the light and atmosphere of the British landscape and also in photographing natural history subjects. He actively participates in national and international exhibitions.

Sunrise

Victor Hugo Casillas

First Prize

I loved the sheer exuberance of this picture. The photographer has balanced the silhouetted four figures on the left side of the frame with the early morning sun on the right – the sun is rising through trees which reduces the area burned out by the intense light. I also liked the way the one figure on the right is turned facing the other three as if leading the celebration of the new day.

Pride of Future

Kaushik Majumder

Second Prize

The photographer has chosen the ideal position to capture the joy of these boys playing football. I was particularly drawn to the facial expressions which showed such happiness, energy and potential for the future. The splashing water and blurred football create a dynamic element to this image and the photographer has chosen a shutter speed that gives a feeling of movement. The background is out of focus and doesn’t distract the viewer from the boys.

Mayfly Dance

Keith Page

Third Prize

One of a number of strong macro shots entered in this competition. The thing that made this image stand out for me was the interaction between the two mayflies, the way the photographer has captured something of the environment that these insects live in and the spot-on exposure of the image. The viewer is reminded of the possibilities and potential of life in the macro world.

This image has all the symbolism of the young girl’s potential in the world. I particularly like the way the tree was included to provide depth and balance. The bright clothing helps the main subject to stand out.

This shot works on two levels – the idea of a young couple starting a new chapter in their lives and the way the world is laid out below their feet.

A slightly surreal image of two young people interacting against a hemisphere that could represent the world. I liked the way both people appear to be looking at papers that the photographer has made the brightest part of the picture – emphasising the shared interest.

An unusual camera angle has created an interesting image of the subjects, appearing to peer into the microscopic world in the bottom of the grasses. The grass frames the scene and the image gives a feeling of looking at the world at your feet.
