Highly Commended

  • Untitled - Einat Shteckler
  • Disappearing Mountain – Michelle Cudiamat
  • Reconstruction – Tomer Rottenberg
  • Energy Transition – Debbie Whitfield
  • Modern agriculture – Roberto Baroni

All the highly commended images are technically good with strong compositions. They have strong messages about the dangers of modern living (plastic bottles), change in our power production due to environmental factors (solar cells and wind farm), and the spread of human habitation to the wilder parts of the globe (Walmart). I presume that the fifth image shows how environmental change is resulting in the shrinkage of glaciers. This is a strong image knowing the remit but to stand alone it would have been better to include more of the surrounding. There is nothing to give scale.

  • Gold & Black – Susanta Mukherjee
  • Gold & Black – Susanta Mukherjee

The two commended images have been chosen for their photographic impact. They fit within the environmental remit but the story telling element is not so strong. Both have very simple but striking compositions. In the first picture, the colours are bold and act as a good background for the silhouetted pylons and wires. In the second very subtle colours are used throughout and the softness of the grasses is balanced by the stark chimney.
